How to Clean a Permanent Furnace Filter

Cleaning a permanent style (not disposable) furnace filter is a frequently neglected but important household chore. Cleaning your own filter keeps your system safe while it runs at peak efficiency. Here’s a handy four-step guide to making sure your filter is squeaky clean:

  • First, turn the HVAC unit off. Carefully remove the filter according to the manufacturer’s instruction.
  • Use your vacuum or shop vac to remove most of the surface dirt from the filter.
  • Clean the filter with warm soapy water. To remove dirt and soap residue, rinse the filter with clean, warm water. Repeat as needed.
  • Carefully replace filter according to the manufacturer’s instructions, and double-check it has been inserted properly. (sometimes there is a direction of air flow)
  • Turn the power back on.

As we already suggested you should also consider the disposable filters. They work very well as filtration with no worries to clean.
